The case management system, housed in an outdated federal data center, was struggling to meet growing user demands. Its legacy infrastructure caused slow data processing, inefficient crime data searches, and offered limited capacity for the increasing case submissions. This substantially limited the capability of analysts to efficiently solve cases.
Solution
i3 modernized the system by migrating it to the cloud, upgrading its capabilities, and enhancing software development practices to increase system efficiency and transparency. Specifically, i3:

Utilized AWS for scalable infrastructure, leveraging AWS CloudFormation for Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to create a reliable and repeatable deployment process.

Replaced the legacy FAST search engine with Elasticsearch, resulting in a 100-fold improvement in search speed.

Implemented Agile methodologies to accelerate release cycles and shift from quarterly to bi-monthly updates for shorter update cycles, faster deployment of system improvements, and increased transparency.

Established a modern Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipeline using GitLab, Docker, and AWS Elastic Container Service (ECS) to automate the deployment and testing processes and significantly increase efficiency.

Conducted comprehensive security scans, remediated vulnerabilities, and ensured federal security standards were met to obtain the system’s Authority to Operate (ATO).
